Red River is starting to run – FM Area Flood 2010 is getting closer

I live right across the street from the Red River and, like many Fargo-Moorhead residents, concerned about the upcoming flood.  Today I noticed some open water on the Red River near my house for the first time this year.  It is just another sign that spring is on its way and flooding is coming.  Open water and the Red River is starting to run free for Fargo flood 2010.

That, combined with warming weather and some melting precipitation, will have an effect on the Fargo flood.  What effect will it have?  That is the big question I guess and I am not sure anybody knows.  I seem to get the vibe of some cautious optimism from some parties while reports still show substantial chances of high flood waters that rival 2009.

While I believe that nobody knows what is going to happen, I have been impressed with the preparation that is taking place.  Obviously they are still looking for volunteers and the turnout has not been spectacular, the city and government has been taking proactive steps to help alleviate the flooding scramble we encountered last year.  Even today, the city was over by my house tearing down trees to make way for a clay dike.  This same area had to be sandbagged last year.

And so it begins.  Snow is beginning to melt and water is beginning to run.   I suspect the larger rises of the Red River will begin in the next week or two and the larger concerns will come to surface.   Until then, I will continue doing what I do and hope for the best while preparing for the worst.
